Electronic Cigarettes – latest must have accessory
After Chihuahua’s, Flash drive jewelry, LCD handbags and the rest, the launch of electronic cigarettes as a fashion accessory comes as no surprise. London Fashion Week 09 saw the launch of these electronic cigarettes along with the usual array of scarves, hats, sunglasses, ties, cuff links, handbags wallets and the likes. The bright spark behind this initiative, however, might come as a bit of a surprise: Lady Victoria Hervey.
The thirty-two year old model, aristocrat and former ‘It’ girl, has returned from LA, where she was pursuing an acting career and she has brought with her luxury electronic cigarettes. This penalized beauty emblazoned with the Hervey family crest (a snow leopard and a crown) has a bejeweled tip and has been designed by Lady Victoria herself.
Her inspiration? “Many of my friends are social smokers and since the ban came in they aren’t able to smoke on nights out any more,” says Lady Victoria. Apart from the styling and candy floss, there is also a serious side to Victoria’s mission. Her father Victor, the sixth Marquis of Bristol, died in 1985, aged 69, from the chronic lung disease emphysema, the result of a lifelong tobacco addiction. That made the posh party crasher want to conquer the electronic smoking industry and she is already making waves with this product in her socialite world.
Victoria met Brian Culwell, the creator of the SmokeStik brand, in LA. ‘I saw him smoking it at a restaurant table. He let me try, and I was so impressed I offered to take the SmokeStik to the UK.’ A smoker since the age of 16, Victoria is clearly thrilled with this new less harmful electronic smoking device. ‘I was even able to smoke this on the plane,’ she says, ‘and the crew were all asking for a drag.’ (Really?)
Electronic cigarettes are also being covered by fashion magazines and blogs like this one. We feel electronic cigarettes truely have the potential to be marketed as a fashion accessory. It is effective and it is different from other products like the patch, the gum, the spray etc. because the physicality of smoking is not lost. Holding of the cigarette, the puffing in and blowing out of smoke — is half of the appeal. One can therefore still look as debonair as Humphrey Bogart circa 1946 while satisfying his nicotine cravings! For those of us who like to call a spade.. a spade, there are electronic cigarettes that look exactly like the real cigarette. For those of us who like to pretty everything up, there are electronic cigarettes in different shapes, sizes, colors and looks.
